The Van Man Co. House Removals

Senior and Elderly Home Moving

The Van Man Co.

Senior and elderly home moves are usually downsizing moves. Leaving a long-term family home for a smaller property, a retirement flat, a sheltered housing scheme or a care home. The transport leg is the practical part: load what’s being kept, drive the route, unload at the destination. The sorting, decluttering and settling-in that sit either side of it are a different kind of work entirely.

TVMC handles the move itself. Loading, transport, multi-stop drop-offs to charity shops and storage, and unloading at the new home. Decluttering, estate agent liaison and senior move management are not services we provide. A lot of families pair a TVMC booking with a specialist downsizing service for that side of things. Family members can book on behalf of an elderly relative. Put the relative’s address as the pickup and their phone as the on-day contact. Pay a 20% deposit to secure the booking.

    More about Senior Moves

Local moving help, explained in detail

Downsizing from a 3 or 4-bed family home of many years usually means a significant reduction in possessions before move day. By the time the driver arrives, the kept items often fit a large van or sometimes a medium. The volume of a long-term family home is no longer what's being transported.

Multi-stop bookings are common on these moves. Some items go to charity shops, some to storage for later decisions, and the main load goes to the new home. A single driver works through all the addresses in order, one booking. Beds, wardrobes and dining furniture often need dismantling at the family home and rebuilding at the new property. Flag this in the booking notes so the driver allocates time and brings the right tools.

Retirement villages, sheltered housing schemes and care homes have their own access rules. Most have designated loading bays, parking restrictions, time windows for deliveries and sometimes a single goods lift that needs booking. McCarthy & Stone, Anchor Hanover, Audley, Inspired Villages and similar developments all run with specific delivery protocols.

Flag any restrictions in the booking notes. Loading bay slots, time windows, parking codes, lift dimensions. Drivers used to these destinations plan around them rather than arriving and finding access denied. For a care home or nursing home where the resident's room is small, prioritise the items that fit and use a multi-stop booking to drop overflow at storage or with a family member. The bookings work the same way as any other move. Access notes are the part that varies.

Most senior moves on the platform are booked by an adult child rather than the person being moved. Put the elderly relative's address as the pickup and their phone as the on-day contact, then your own details for booking confirmations and payment. The driver coordinates with the relative on the day. You get the booking updates by email.

If the relative needs a slower pace, has hearing or mobility considerations, or has a preference for how the driver approaches on arrival, put it in the booking notes. Drivers see the notes before they accept the job and the ones who take senior moves are usually happy to work at a calmer pace. If a follow-up trip is needed, rebook the same driver from their profile.

Senior Moves — frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about this service

    8 FAQs
Can family members book a move on behalf of an elderly relative?

Yes. The booker doesn't need to be the person being moved. Put the elderly relative's address as the pickup and their phone as the on-day contact, then your own contact details for confirmations and payment. The driver coordinates with the relative directly on the day.

Do you help with decluttering or sorting before the move?

No — TVMC drivers handle the physical move (loading, transport, unloading). Sorting, decluttering, estate agent liaison and the wider senior move management package aren't services we provide. Many customers pair a TVMC booking with a specialist downsizing service or family handling the sorting.

Can you move someone into a retirement village, sheltered housing or care home?

Yes. These destinations are part of the regular job mix. Flag any parking restrictions, loading bay rules or delivery time windows in the booking notes so the driver plans around them.

Can you drop items at charity shops on the way?

Yes. Multi-stop bookings cover this. Set the charity shop or other drop-off points as separate addresses alongside the main destination and the driver works through them in order.

Are the drivers patient with elderly people who need extra time?

Drivers on the platform are independent operators with their own working styles. The drivers who regularly take senior moves are usually happy to work at a slower pace — flag the requirement in the booking notes and the right driver will accept the job.

What happens to items that need temporary storage?

Multi-stop bookings can drop items at a storage unit alongside the main move. Useful when the new property is smaller than the old one and decisions on some possessions haven't been finalised.

Can we book unloading-only if someone has driven the items separately?

Yes — if relatives have transported items themselves but need help unloading and placing furniture at the destination, book a man and van booking with a helper for the unloading leg only. Set the same address as both pickup and drop-off and add the access notes.

    How does payment work?

20% deposit to secure the booking when you confirm, the remaining balance is settled on the day of the move.

Senior Moves available across the UK

Local drivers covering cities, towns, counties and regions

    259 areas

Senior and elderly home moves run across every UK region. Most start from a long-term family home in a suburb or commuter town. Some go to where children and grandchildren are based. Many go to retirement coasts or inland spots popular for this kind of move. A fair proportion stay within the same county, relocating to a retirement village or sheltered housing scheme.

Retirement village operators that come up regularly include McCarthy & Stone, Anchor Hanover, Audley Retirement Villages, Inspired Villages, Richmond Villages and ExtraCare Charitable Trust. Sheltered housing and assisted-living moves run through housing associations and council schemes across England, Scotland and Wales. Care home and nursing home moves are part of the regular mix. Drivers handle the time-windowed access, restricted parking and small-room placements these destinations involve.

The South West sees a lot of inbound retirement moves from the South East and the Midlands. Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset are all common destinations. The North Wales coast and the Yorkshire Coast attract moves from Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham. The South Coast from Bournemouth to Worthing sees regular arrivals from London and the Home Counties. Inland retirement spots like the Cotswolds, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales have driver coverage throughout.

Family-coordinated moves often cross regions. A parent moving from a Surrey family home to a retirement flat near children in Yorkshire, for instance, or from a Manchester suburb to a Cornish coastal cottage. The route-time pricing model handles these without a separate distance surcharge.
