The Van Man Co. House Removals

Fragile Item Transport and Delivery

The Van Man Co.

Fragile transport sits somewhere between a standard man-and-van booking and a specialist fine-art service. The specialist movers handle museum loans, high-value insurance work and export-grade packing. If that’s what you need, they’re the right call. For everything else, mirrors, framed prints, antique furniture, glassware, inherited china and decorative pieces, a careful driver in a properly braced van handles it at a fraction of the cost.

The booking works the same as any other job. The main thing that matters is which driver you pick. Drivers who regularly handle fragile work flag it in their profiles, so look for that when you’re choosing. Items should be wrapped before the driver arrives. The driver braces everything in the van with blankets and straps once it’s loaded. If you need packing materials, request them in advance. They aren’t carried in the van as standard.

    More about Fragile Transport

Local moving help, explained in detail

Paintings, framed photographs, large prints, mirrors and wall pieces are among the most common fragile bookings. They all transport well when wrapped properly and braced correctly in the van. The main thing to sort before the driver arrives is the glass face on any framed piece. Wrap it in cardboard and bubble wrap. Loose glass on a large painting is a problem waiting to happen.

For anything over 2 metres on the longest side, book a Luton. The interior handles most large artworks comfortably, though very tall pieces may need loading flat across blankets rather than standing upright. Gallery, auction-house and dealer pickups work as standard bookings. The driver collects with the gallery's release paperwork, loads carefully and delivers. For pieces over £2,000, confirm cover details with your chosen driver before you book.

Antique furniture moves come up regularly after probate sales, auction wins and inheritance. Solid-wood pieces need blanket wrapping and careful loading to avoid contact damage on the journey. Most drivers carry standard removal blankets and those are fine for general antique work. For finely-finished pieces with French polish, marquetry or gilt detailing, bring your own export-grade wrapping or quilted specialist covers. The driver's standard blankets aren't that level of protection.

Auction-house collections are handled as standard bookings. The driver arrives with proof of the lot, the item gets released and loaded into the van. For collections being split between family members after a downsize or estate clearance, multi-stop bookings handle the whole thing in one run. Everything gets picked up from the family home and each piece gets dropped at a different address. One booking, one driver, done.

Glassware, ceramics, china and chandeliers all need to be properly boxed and packed before transport. Loose glassware in a moving van will rattle into damage. The same items wrapped in tissue, packed into dish-pack boxes and braced in the van arrive intact. The driver doesn't pack items from scratch on the day. If you need packing materials, request them in advance through the booking system.

Chandeliers need a bit more thought than most items. The glass droplets, crystal pendants and metal arms will damage each other if they aren't separated before the journey. Wrap the whole thing in cloth, separate the parts where you can, box everything and label it. Sculptures and pottery follow the same logic. Wrap the item well, get it into a box, make sure it can't move around. For museum-quality pieces or original sculpture, a specialist art transport service is usually the safer route.

Fragile Transport — frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about this service

    6 FAQs
How do you keep fragile items safe in transit?

Every van carries blankets, straps and securing gear. For fragile pieces, wrap the item before the driver arrives or request packing materials in advance. Flag the fragility in the booking notes. The driver loads carefully and braces everything securely before moving off. For anything high-value or delicate, look for drivers who flag fragile experience in their profile when you're making your selection.

Can you transport mirrors and artwork?

Yes — small-to-medium mirrors and framed artwork fit any van size. Very large pieces (over 2m) need a Luton van for vertical clearance. Wrap the glass face in cardboard and bubble wrap before the driver arrives — loose glass is a damage risk.

    Do you deliver antique furniture?

Yes — antique transport is a regular booking. Items are blanket-wrapped for the journey using the driver's standard kit. For very valuable pieces with fine finishes, bring your own export-grade or quilted wrapping; specialist materials aren't carried on the van by default.

What about chandeliers, lamps and glassware?

Doable — but they need to be boxed and packed before pickup. Loose glassware in a van is a recipe for damage; properly wrapped, boxed and braced, it transports fine. Request packing materials in advance through the booking system if you need them.

Can you collect from a gallery, auction house or dealer?

Yes — gallery and auction-house collections are routine. Bring the paperwork showing the item is yours, flag fragility in the booking notes, and the driver handles pickup and delivery with the appropriate care.

    How does payment work?

20% deposit to secure the booking when you confirm, the remaining balance is settled on the day.

Fragile Transport available across the UK

Local drivers covering cities, towns, counties and regions

    259 areas

Fragile item transport runs across the whole UK through the same driver network as every other service. The heaviest concentrations are in and around the major auction and gallery markets.

London is the busiest area. Mayfair, the West End, Bond Street and Belgravia have the main gallery concentrations. Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Bonhams and Phillips all sit within a few miles of each other in central London and generate a steady flow of pickup and delivery bookings. Edinburgh is the next biggest. The New Town and Stockbridge have a strong gallery scene and Lyon and Turnbull is the main Scottish auction house. Chester is one of the busiest provincial auction markets. The southern English country auction circuit, Cheffins in Cambridge, Dreweatts in Newbury and Tennants in Leyburn, all come up regularly too.

Item types transported regularly include framed paintings, mirrors, large prints, photography, sculpture, antique furniture, glassware and crystal, china and porcelain, ceramics, chandeliers and decorative lighting, upright pianos, grandfather clocks and longcase pieces, decorative collections and wine collections in transit between cellars or storage.

Source types include galleries, auction houses, antique dealers, estate clearances, private collectors, vintage and mid-century specialists and inherited pieces from probate sales.

Coverage is strong in London, the South East, Edinburgh, the Cotswolds, the Welsh borders and the Lake District antique circuit. North Yorkshire, the Scottish Borders and the West Country coastal antique fairs all have driver coverage through the network. For museum-quality pieces or shipments needing fine-art specific cover, a specialist art transport service is the better fit. For everything else, the network handles it.
