The Van Man Co. House Removals

Moving-related Storage and Transfers

The Van Man Co.

TVMC handles the transport side of self-storage moves. We are not a storage provider. You arrange the unit directly with Safestore, Big Yellow, Shurgard, Access or whichever operator suits you. We supply the driver and van.

The booking works the same way as any move. Enter your home postcode and your storage facility’s postcode, pick the van size that fits your unit volume and add a loading and unloading time. Medium vans suit smaller units, Lutons handle bigger loads. Multi-stop bookings cover the full sequence in one run. Pay a 20% deposit to secure the booking, settle the rest on the day.

    More about Storage Transfers

Local moving help, explained in detail

The most common storage booking is one-way: out of the family home, into a self-storage unit. The driver loads at the home, transports to the storage facility, and unloads into your unit. Most self-storage sites have trolleys, lifts and dollies on site. The driver uses them as part of the unloading time you have booked.

Van size should match the unit. A 10-25 sq ft unit fits in a medium van. For anything larger, a Luton is usually the right call. Most units are accessed via lift or ground floor, but some facilities have outdoor or upper-floor units that take longer to load. Flag it in the booking notes and the driver allocates the right time.

The retrieval booking is the reverse of the move-in. The driver meets you at the storage facility, you open the unit, and they load and deliver to your destination. If only some items are coming home and others are going elsewhere, multi-stop bookings handle that in one run.

The biggest variable on a retrieval is access at the facility. Most self-storage chains close at 5pm, with some extended-hours sites running later. Confirm your access window with the storage provider before booking the driver. If your unit is on an upper floor or in an outdoor row, factor a few extra minutes into the unloading time.

Storage-to-storage transfers are a small but useful niche. People switch facilities when moving closer to a new address, when a cheaper rate comes up, or when a site closes. The booking works the same way as any other. Old facility as the pickup postcode, new facility as the drop-off, plus loading and unloading time at each end.

Multi-stop moves with storage in the middle are more common. The usual pattern is pickup from home, overflow dropped at storage, the rest at the new address. One booking, one driver, one route. The driver works through the stops in order. Set them all on the booking form and the route time covers the full sequence.

Storage Transfers — frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about this service

    8 FAQs
Can you collect items from a self-storage unit and deliver them home?

Yes. The driver meets you at the storage facility, loads from your unit, and delivers to your destination. Most major chains are straightforward to collect from. Mention the facility in the booking notes so the driver can plan access.

Can you drop items into a storage unit during a house move?

Yes. Multi-stop bookings cover this. Pickup from home, some items dropped at the storage unit, the rest at the new address. All in one booking with one driver.

What van size do I need for a storage unit?

A 10-25 sq ft unit usually fits a medium van. For anything larger, a Luton is the safe bet. The booking system shows all three sizes side by side.

Can you transfer items between two different storage facilities?

Yes. Driver collects at the old facility, delivers to the new one. Factor opening hours at both ends when picking your time slot.

Do storage facilities have loading help included?

No. Self-storage providers give you the unit and access, but loading and unloading is your responsibility. That is the gap TVMC fills: the driver and van, plus an optional helper for heavy or awkward items.

What happens if my storage unit is on an upper floor?

Most self-storage sites have trolleys and lifts. Your driver uses them as part of the loading/unloading time you've booked. If the unit is in an awkward spot or the lift is small or slow, budget a few extra minutes — it's billed at the same hourly rate.

Do you provide the storage unit itself?

No. TVMC handles the transport. You arrange the unit directly with your chosen storage provider. We move your items to and from it.

    How does payment work?

20% deposit to secure the booking when you confirm, the remaining balance is settled on the day.

Storage Transfers available across the UK

Local drivers covering cities, towns, counties and regions

    259 areas

Self-storage transport runs across every UK region TVMC covers. Any facility, any chain. Safestore, Big Yellow, Shurgard, Access Self Storage, Lok’nStore and independent operators are all in scope. If you have a unit there, a driver can reach it.

London has the highest concentration of self-storage sites on the network. The M25 corridor alone has over 100 facilities. Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Edinburgh and Glasgow all have multiple sites covered. Smaller cities and market towns increasingly have independent operators alongside the national chains, so coverage extends well beyond the major cities.

Van size guides the booking. Small units, roughly 10-25 sq ft, usually fill a medium van. Larger units need a Luton. Anything requiring more than a Luton load is typically a two-trip or removals job. Ground-floor units are the quickest to load. Upper-floor units add time because of lift waits. Factor it in when estimating loading time.

People use storage transport for different reasons. Delayed completions, downsizing overflow, post-renovation retrieval, clearing a parent’s home, returning from abroad. The booking model is the same regardless: two postcodes, a van size, a loading time estimate and an instant price.
