This guide covers 10 man with a van services worth considering for moves in Reading, from Victorian terraces in Katesgrove and Newtown to family homes in Caversham, Earley and Woodley. Reading has no Clean Air Zone, so there’s no daily charge for a van, but it does have Red Routes and resident permit zones, so parking is worth sorting before the day. The Van Man Co is first on the list, and the other nine are local firms with their own websites you can check.

How your booking & deposit works
This guide covers 10 services worth looking at for moves in Reading: local independents, a couple of long-established removal firms for the bigger jobs, and The Van Man Co first, since you’re already here.
What a man and van service actually is
You get a driver and a van, and the price is based on the time the job takes. Loading, the drive and unloading are all part of it. Some drivers work on their own and others bring a helper, depending on the job.
It handles most Reading moves well. A one bed flat in the town centre, a student room near the University of Reading, a single piece of furniture from Facebook Marketplace. For a full three bed house it can still work, though you’ll want to check the van size and whether a second pair of hands is included. Man and van services booked through a platform let you see the drivers and a price before you commit.
Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest days across our own bookings, so those slots go first. With the University of Reading in town, the start and end of term are busy as well.
How it typically works
Give your pickup and drop-off postcodes and say what needs moving. Pick a van size and a time. If there’s more than one address, mention it up front.
Reading has its own complications, and they’re worth mentioning when you book. Katesgrove, just south of the town centre, is a dense network of narrow streets lined with Victorian terraces, and Newtown in East Reading is terraced too, with a lot of students. Both are tight for a van. Some main roads are Red Routes, where stopping isn’t allowed without a dispensation. Caversham is across the Thames to the north, and Earley, Woodley and Tilehurst are a few miles out, so the drive across town is part of the job. If any of this applies to your move, say so up front, because it all adds time.
1. The Van Man Co
The Van Man Co connects customers with independent local drivers covering Reading and the rest of the UK. There are three van sizes: medium, large and Luton. You put in your postcodes, pick a van and get a price estimate straight away, based on time and distance and including the driver’s travel to you and back.
A booking is a request until a driver confirms. Your card isn’t charged until then, when a 20% deposit is taken, and the rest is paid in cash to the driver on the day. Drivers bring blankets, straps and a trolley. Insurance cover varies by driver, and you can check a driver’s cover after making a booking request and before the deposit is charged. Find local drivers and get a price on the Reading man and van page.
2. Man and Van Reading
Based on Russell Street, close to the town centre, with what the site describes as over 10 years in business. They run a long wheelbase Sprinter and take anything from student moves to one and two bed flats, with furniture taken apart and put back together included. They are an upper tier waste carrier, and cover Reading and the surrounding area, including Caversham, Tilehurst, Earley and Woodley.
3. Reading Man and Van
A local firm on Prospect Street offering house and flat removals, office relocations and single item deliveries. The site lists small, medium and large Luton vans and describes the service as fully insured. They cover Reading and the surrounding area, out to Wokingham and Henley-on-Thames.
4. RG Man and Van Removals
A removals company based in Reading with two Luton vans, both fitted with tail lifts. The site says they offer goods in transit insurance. Beyond removals and student moves, they do house and rubbish clearance, crate hire and end of tenancy cleaning, which is useful if you’re leaving a rental.
5. Robinson Transport & Removals
Based on Loverock Road in west Reading, with a range of vehicles including Lutons and Sprinters. The site lists student removals, furniture collections and deliveries, and motorcycle transport. They also handle overseas shipping, including pallets and excess baggage.
6. Reading Removal Company Ltd
A new firm, established in 2025 according to its site. It lists man and van services, student moves, small moves, eBay collections and motorbike transport, with large Luton vans available. The site states liability insurance and goods in transit cover, and says it is open 24 hours.
7. Caversham Moves Ltd
A removals firm from Caversham, north of the river. They do home and business removals, packing and storage, and the site says all staff go through industry accredited training. A good one to ask if you’re moving in or out of Caversham and want a crew.
8. Man With a Van Services
Based in Bracknell, with a page for Reading jobs. They use long wheelbase vans, and the site describes them as a fully insured removal company with upper tier waste carrier status. Removals, single item moves, clearance and storage are all listed, across Reading, Woodley, Wokingham and the towns to the east.
9. Nightingale Removals & Storage
A family owned removals business running since 1958, with a Reading branch on Market Place and ten branches in all. They are a British Association of Removers member and offer storage. This is a full removal firm, so worth pricing for a whole house.
10. Wilkins of Henley
Established in 1880, with premises on Cardiff Road in Reading, and holders of a royal warrant. They do home and business removals, packing, storage, international shipping and fine art handling. The one on this list to ask if you’re moving something valuable or awkward.

Comparing quotes
Most man and van firms price by the hour, and the rate varies with the van and the firm. Ask what the final number includes before you confirm: fuel or mileage, a minimum booking, and what happens if the job runs over. Our guide to how much a man and van costs shows what our own last 500 jobs came to, by van size and time booked.
The cheapest hourly rate doesn’t always give the cheapest bill. A van that’s too small means a second trip, and that costs more than a slightly bigger van that does it in one. Look at reviews alongside price, and look for jobs like yours.
Reviews and track record
Volume matters. A firm with a few hundred reviews and consistent feedback tells you more than one with four reviews and five stars. Look for reviews from the past year and watch for patterns. Late arrivals and prices that change at the end are the two complaints worth screening for.
Local experience counts for something in Reading too. A driver who knows the terraces in Katesgrove and Newtown, and which roads are Red Routes, will save you time on the day.
Matching the service to your job
Be accurate about what you’re moving. Vans fill up quicker than most people expect. If you have 30 boxes, a sofa, a bed and a wardrobe, say so when you book. Our van size calculator shows your own list loaded into each van.
For a bigger home, or if you want the packing done for you, price a full removal firm as well. Caversham Moves, Nightingale Removals & Storage and Wilkins of Henley are the ones on this list set up for that.
Is there a Clean Air Zone in Reading?
No. Reading isn’t on GOV.UK’s list of cities with a Clean Air Zone, so there’s no daily charge for a van moving you within the town.
What Reading does have is emissions-based charging for on-street parking, brought in from February 2026. It applies to pay and display bays and permits, so it affects what you pay to park, not whether a van can drive in.
Parking in Reading
Reading has resident permit zones, and the council is clear that spaces cannot be reserved. Some zones allow limited waiting for vehicles without a permit, and the signs on the street show the times. The council’s permit rules also list emergency cover for moving house, and a temporary permit for people who have just moved into a zone.
If your address is on a Red Route, a van can’t stop there without a dispensation. The council’s terms say a Red Route dispensation is intended for essential activities such as removals. It needs at least six working days to process, and you apply online with the van’s registration.
We couldn’t find a council page for suspending an ordinary parking bay for a removal, so if you need one kept clear, ask the council’s parking services directly. Parking is your responsibility at both ends, so sort it early and tell the driver where the van can stop.
Common mistakes
Underestimating the load is the most common one. People leave half their boxes out when they describe a move, then the van is full before everything’s on. List what you actually have.
Not checking for a Red Route is the Reading one. If the van can’t stop outside, the job starts with a long carry, and a dispensation takes six working days.
Booking too small a van is the third. A second trip across town, over the river or out to Woodley, takes longer than most people expect.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a man and van cost in Reading?
It depends on the van and how long the job takes, including the driver’s travel to you and back. Most firms charge by the hour. Our guide to how much a man and van costs shows what our own last 500 jobs came to.
Is there a Clean Air Zone charge for vans in Reading?
No. Reading isn’t on the government’s list of cities with a Clean Air Zone. The council does have emissions-based charges for on-street parking, which is a parking cost and not a charge for driving in.
How do I arrange parking for moving day in Reading?
Check whether either address is in a resident permit zone or on a Red Route. On a Red Route, apply online for a dispensation, which the council says is intended for essential activities such as removals and takes at least six working days. For anything else, contact the council’s parking services.
Which parts of Reading are hardest to move in?
Katesgrove and Newtown, where narrow streets of Victorian terraces make it tight for a van. Addresses on Red Routes, where a van can’t stop without a dispensation. Mention any of these when you book.
What’s the difference between a man and van and a full removal company?
A man and van is a driver, sometimes with a helper, and one van, priced on time. A removal company sends a crew and a bigger vehicle and usually quotes for the whole job, often with packing. For a flat, a man and van is usually enough. For a full house, it’s worth pricing both.
