Top 10 Man with a Van Services in Leeds

This guide covers 10 man with a van services worth considering for moves in Leeds, from student terraces in Headingley and Hyde Park to flats in the city centre. Leeds has no Clean Air Zone, so there’s no daily charge for a van in the city, and the council says removal vans don’t need a parking dispensation to load. The Van Man Co is first on the list, and the other nine are local firms with their own websites you can check.

Our removalists box up your loose items — clothes, kitchenware, books, ornaments. Choose No if you'll box these up yourself.

A quick walkthrough video helps us recommend the right van size and give you an accurate quote. Just a 1-minute phone video of each room showing what's coming and what's staying works perfectly.

This guide covers 10 services worth looking at for moves in Leeds: local independents, a couple of full removal firms for the bigger jobs, and The Van Man Co first, since you’re already here.

What a man and van service actually is

You get a driver and a van, and the price is based on the time the job takes. Loading, the drive and unloading are all part of it. Some drivers work on their own and others bring a helper, depending on the job.

It handles most Leeds moves well. A one bed flat in the city centre, a student room in Headingley, a single piece of furniture from Facebook Marketplace. For a full three bed house it can still work, though you’ll want to check the van size and whether a second pair of hands is included. Man and van services booked through a platform let you see the drivers and a price before you commit.

Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest days across our own bookings, so those slots go first. Leeds is a big student city, with the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett, so the start and end of term are busy as well.

    How it typically works

Give your pickup and drop-off postcodes and say what needs moving. Pick a van size and a time. If there’s more than one address, mention it up front.

Leeds has its own complications, and they’re worth mentioning when you book. The student areas north of the centre, Headingley, Hyde Park, Burley and Woodhouse, are mostly Victorian terraces, and Hyde Park in particular is back-to-back terraced streets. That means tight roads and not much room to stop a van. In the city centre, a lot of the housing is flats, including converted warehouses around The Calls, and Briggate is pedestrianised, so check where a van can actually load. If any of this applies to your move, say so up front, because it all adds loading time.

    1. The Van Man Co

The Van Man Co connects customers with independent local drivers covering Leeds and the rest of the UK. There are three van sizes: medium, large and Luton. You put in your postcodes, pick a van and get a price estimate straight away, based on time and distance and including the driver’s travel to you and back.

A booking is a request until a driver confirms. Your card isn’t charged until then, when a 20% deposit is taken, and the rest is paid in cash to the driver on the day. Drivers bring blankets, straps and a trolley. Insurance cover varies by driver, and you can check a driver’s cover after making a booking request and before the deposit is charged. Find local drivers and get a price on the Leeds man and van page.

    2. Man With A Van Leeds

Started in 2016 with a single long wheelbase van, according to their site, and now running three: a long wheelbase van, a Sprinter and a Luton. They say they carry goods in transit and public liability insurance on every job. They cover all Leeds districts from LS1 to LS29, plus Bradford, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Halifax, Harrogate and York, and work seven days a week. Student moves are a regular job.

    3. The Van Man Leeds

Based in Headingley, which puts them in the middle of the student area. The site lists house moves, furniture moves, eBay collections and student moves, and says the service is fully insured. A sensible one to ask for smaller jobs around Headingley and Hyde Park.

    4. Yorkshire Van Man

Based in north Leeds. They use Luton vans, which they say carry loads of up to 20 cubic metres, and state they are insured for up to £20,000 for the value of your goods. As well as man with a van jobs, the site lists domestic and office removals, storage and waste clearance, and shows a waste carrier’s licence.

    5. Kevs Van

Based in Guiseley, on the north west edge of Leeds, with two vans and three men. The site lists house, office and furniture removals, deliveries and collections, house clearance, and taking furniture apart and putting it back together. They also say they will pick up from anywhere in the UK and bring it back to Leeds.

    6. ALH Removals

Runs an extra long wheelbase Mercedes Sprinter and covers central Leeds and the areas east of it. The site states goods in transit cover of up to £20,000 on every load. You can book one man and a van or two, and they also do care home moves, small office moves, and disconnecting and reconnecting washing machines and dishwashers.

    7. Matthews Removals

Based in Belle Isle in south Leeds, with a page just for man with a van work. That page lists house, flat and student moves, including moving into university halls. Packing, office removals and storage are available too, and the site describes its removals as insured.

    8. Leeds Man and Van Removals

A small firm based in Leeds 12, with two vans. The site covers house removals in Leeds and West Yorkshire and has a service for student moves. It doesn’t say much about insurance, so ask about cover before you book.

    9. White Rose Removals

A family-owned removals company based in Leeds. This is a full removal firm, not a man and van: domestic and commercial moves and storage, with regular runs across the UK, Ireland and Europe. The site says it follows the British Association of Removers’ dispute resolution scheme. Worth pricing for a whole house.

    10. Barrons Removals & Storage

A family-run removals and storage firm in Sherburn in Elmet, east of the city, covering postcodes LS1 to LS29. The site lists house and office removals, packing and storage, says moves are fully insured, and shows membership of the National Relocation Association. Another one for the bigger jobs.

    How to choose between them

    Comparing quotes

Most man and van firms price by the hour, and the rate varies with the van and the firm. Ask what the final number includes before you confirm: fuel or mileage, a minimum booking, and what happens if the job runs over. Our guide to how much a man and van costs shows what our own last 500 jobs came to, by van size and time booked.

The cheapest hourly rate doesn’t always give the cheapest bill. A van that’s too small means a second trip, and that costs more than a slightly bigger van that does it in one. Look at reviews alongside price, and look for jobs like yours.

    Reviews and track record

Volume matters. A firm with a few hundred reviews and consistent feedback tells you more than one with four reviews and five stars. Look for reviews from the past year and watch for patterns. Late arrivals and prices that change at the end are the two complaints worth screening for.

Local experience counts for something in Leeds too. A driver who works Headingley and Hyde Park every week knows which streets a Luton fits down.

Matching the service to your job

Be accurate about what you’re moving. Vans fill up quicker than most people expect. If you have 30 boxes, a sofa, a bed and a wardrobe, say so when you book. Our van size calculator shows your own list loaded into each van.

For a bigger home, or if you want the packing done for you, price a full removal firm as well. White Rose Removals and Barrons Removals & Storage are the two on this list set up for that.

Is there a Clean Air Zone in Leeds?

No. Leeds planned one, but GOV.UK’s Clean Air Zone guidance records that Leeds City Council decided not to introduce it. So there’s no daily charge for a van moving you within Leeds.

It’s different if the job goes to another city. Bradford and Sheffield both have Clean Air Zones, and the same GOV.UK page links to a checker for any registration. With us, charges like this are the customer’s responsibility where the route requires them, so mention it when you book if your move ends in one of those cities.

    Parking in Leeds

Leeds is simpler than most cities here. The council’s parking policy says removal vans do not require a dispensation. Loading and unloading is allowed for as long as necessary, up to 20 minutes at a time in a permitted bay or on yellow lines, as long as there’s no loading ban.

If you need a pay and display bay kept clear for longer, the council has a suspension scheme, and its policy gives furniture removals as an example. Suspensions are charged per bay, per day. The policy doesn’t give the price or a notice period, so contact the council’s parking services in good time.

Plenty of streets near the centre and the universities are resident permit zones. The council’s visitor permit is free, but only one is issued per household. Parking is your responsibility at both ends, so sort it early and tell the driver where the van can stop.

    Common mistakes

Underestimating the load is the most common one. People leave half their boxes out when they describe a move, then the van is full before everything’s on. List what you actually have.

Assuming the van can park outside is the Leeds one. On a back-to-back terrace in Hyde Park or a city centre street, it often can’t. Check before the day, and tell the driver.

Booking too small a van is the third. A second trip across the city takes longer than most people expect.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a man and van cost in Leeds?

It depends on the van and how long the job takes, including the driver’s travel to you and back. Most firms charge by the hour. Our guide to how much a man and van costs shows what our own last 500 jobs came to.

Is there a Clean Air Zone charge for vans in Leeds?

No. Leeds City Council decided not to introduce a Clean Air Zone. Bradford and Sheffield do have them, so check if your move goes to either.

Do I need a parking permit for a removal van in Leeds?

Usually not. The council’s parking policy says removal vans do not require a dispensation, and loading is allowed where there’s no loading ban. To keep a pay and display bay clear for longer, ask the council’s parking services about a suspension.

Which parts of Leeds are hardest to move in?

The back-to-back terraces in Hyde Park and the terraced streets in Headingley, Burley and Woodhouse, where it’s tight for a van. City centre flats bring lifts and limited loading. Mention any of these when you book.

What’s the difference between a man and van and a full removal company?

A man and van is a driver, sometimes with a helper, and one van, priced on time. A removal company sends a crew and a bigger vehicle and usually quotes for the whole job, often with packing. For a flat, a man and van is usually enough. For a full house, it’s worth pricing both.
