    More about Shared Moves

Local moving help, explained in detail

End-of-term moves out of student housing are one of the highest-volume use cases for shared bookings. Four students in a shared Manchester house, all heading home to different cities at the same time. Instead of four separate man and van bookings, one shared booking covers the lot. The driver collects from the shared house, drops the first student at home, drives to the second, and so on.

The route order depends on geography. The most efficient sequence given the home addresses is usually the right one, but the students can adjust if anyone needs to be dropped first or last for a specific reason. The total job time is what it is, and the cost splits between the students on whatever basis they agree before the booking.

Items stay separated in the van. Each student's stuff goes in together, labelled if you want. The driver knows which boxes belong to which person from the loading order and the labels. Nothing gets mixed up.

When a flat-share comes to an end, the timing is often tight. The tenancy expires on a fixed date, the deposit return depends on getting the place cleared on time, and each flatmate is heading to a different new address. Booking three or four separate man and van jobs to clear the same place gets expensive fast.

A shared booking covers everyone in one run. The driver arrives at the shared flat once, loads everyone's belongings together in agreed groups, then works through the new addresses in order. Less coordination on moving day, less waiting around, lower total cost.

Each flatmate's items go in clearly separated. Set the addresses in the booking form in the order you want them visited, or let the driver pick the most efficient sequence. The hourly rate runs from the start of the loading to the end of the last drop-off, and the total splits between the flatmates on the basis they agree.

Family moves on the same day are a quieter but still common version of the shared booking. A parent and adult child both moving on the same Saturday. Two siblings going from one shared property to two new homes. A couple of friends helping each other out by combining their move-out day.

The booking works the same way. Submit one job with multiple pickup and drop-off addresses, choose a van size that fits the combined load, and the driver handles the run. Most of these jobs fit a large van or Luton because each individual load is on the smaller side.

The cost split is private. The platform doesn't divide the bill between accounts automatically. The lead booker pays the deposit and the final amount, and the parties sort out the split between themselves. For most groups that's the easiest way. One person organises, the others bank-transfer their share afterwards.

Shared Moves — frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about this service

    8 FAQs

How does the cost get split between people sharing the booking?

That's between the people sharing it. The platform bills the booking as a single job. Whoever books the move pays the deposit and the final amount, and the group sorts the split afterwards. Equal shares are most common but you can weight it however you agree.

Can I share a booking with someone I don't know?

No. Shared moves on TVMC are for people who already know each other. The platform doesn't pair strangers together. If you're moving on your own, book a solo man and van job at the standard hourly rate.

How many pickup and drop-off addresses can I add?

As many as the booking form allows, which covers most realistic shared scenarios. Three to five stops is the typical range. More than that and the route gets long, so consider whether two shorter bookings would actually work out cheaper.

What van size should we pick?

Add up everyone's loads roughly. A few students with single rooms each can usually share a Luton. A flat-share with three people leaving usually needs a Luton too. For two people sharing with small loads each, a large van often works.

Are everyone's items kept separate in the van?

Yes. The driver loads each person's items together as a group and labels are encouraged. The loading order also follows the planned drop-off sequence, so the first person's items end up at the back for easy unloading.

Can each person have a different drop-off date?

No. A shared booking happens on a single day. If people need to move on different days, that's separate bookings rather than one shared one.

What if one of us needs more time at our drop-off than the others?

That's fine. The hourly billing covers however long the full job takes, including the unloading time at each address. The other people share the cost of the extra time on the same basis they're sharing the rest of the bill.

    How does payment work?

The lead booker pays the 20% deposit to secure the booking. On the day, the lead booker pays the balance to the driver. The split between the group happens privately between the people sharing the booking, on whatever basis you agreed.

Shared Moves available across the UK

Shared moves run UK-wide through the same driver network as standard man and van bookings. The volume is highest around the university calendar, especially end of summer term, late September arrivals, Christmas break and Easter. Student cities like Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Nottingham and Sheffield all see regular shared bookings during these peaks.

University students dropping back to home cities create the biggest cluster of routes. A Manchester student going home to Cardiff, another to Newcastle, another to London. All from the same shared house, on the same day, in one booking. The driver runs the M6 down, splits off as needed, and returns.

Outside the student peaks, the regular use case is flat-share break-ups in major cities. London especially, where flat-shares ending and each tenant moving to a different new address is a frequent monthly pattern across every postcode. The same pattern repeats in Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and the other large rental markets.

Family-and-friend shared moves happen across the country with no particular regional skew. Two siblings moving on the same day, a parent and adult child organising their moves together, a couple of friends combining their move-out timing. These are smaller individually but add up across the network.

Pricing is the same as any other man and van booking. The hourly rate doesn’t change because the van is shared between people who know each other. It’s a multi-stop booking, billed the way multi-stop has always been billed. What you save is the cost of separate bookings. Three students booking separately pay three lots of route time. Shared, they pay one route and split it three ways.
