Luton Van vs Large Van: Which Do You Need for Your Move?

Quick summary (October 2026): A Luton van holds about 18m³, nearly twice the roughly 10m³ of a large Transit-size van, and it’s taller inside, about 220cm against 180cm. A large van suits a studio or 1 bed flat with furniture, boxes-only moves up to a 3 bed, and single bulky items. A Luton suits a furnished 2 bed, and tall or bulky furniture such as a double wardrobe, which stands up in a Luton but has to lie down in a large van. The Van Man Co’s 3D van size calculator puts a typical furnished 2 bed at 12.35m³, one trip in a Luton or two in a large van. Both are usually 3.5 tonne vans, which a standard car licence covers. To see drivers and prices, start with the Bristol man and van page.

When you’re booking a man and van for a move, the choice usually comes down to two vans: a large panel van, the Ford Transit kind, or a Luton with its box body. They look fairly similar from the outside, but the space inside is quite different.

The right one depends on how much furniture you have, how tall it is, and how far you’re going. Here’s how to tell which you need.

The simplest way to check is to load your own things into both and see which one fits.

Luton van vs large van at a glance

The Luton is bigger in every direction, and the extra height is the part people notice most on moving day. These are the vans we use:

Measurements vary a little between models, and our large van figures are for a typical Transit. Ford’s own range goes further, with up to 15.1m³ of load space in its longest, tallest versions.

When a large van is enough

A large van does more than people expect, as long as the furniture isn’t too tall:

  • A studio or 1 bed flat with furniture. Our calculator puts them at about 5.67m³ and 7.02m³.
  • Boxes and bags only, up to a typical 3 bed, at about 5.99m³.
  • Single bulky items, like a sofa, a bed or a fridge freezer. With about 180cm of headroom, a typical 175cm fridge freezer can just stand up.
  • Student moves and part loads, where it’s more boxes than furniture.

    When you need a Luton

Go for a Luton when there’s a lot of furniture, or when the furniture is tall:

    • A furnished 2 bed, which our calculator puts at about 12.35m³. That’s more than a large van takes in one trip.
    • Tall furniture. A double wardrobe is about 200cm high, so it stands up in a Luton’s 220cm but has to go on its side in a large van, which takes up far more floor.
    • Bulky sofas, corner units and dining sets, which leave dead space around them and fill a van faster than their size suggests.
    • Longer moves, where a second trip isn’t really an option.

Two trips in a large van, or one in a Luton?

A typical furnished 2 bed is one trip in a Luton or two in a large van, and the calculator shows both. Which is better depends mostly on the distance.

On a short local move, a second trip is mostly extra driving time, so a large van and two trips can work out fine. On a long one, it means doing the whole journey twice, and the Luton is almost always the better choice. The price is an estimate based on time and distance, including the driver’s travel to your pickup and back from your drop-off, so every extra trip shows up as extra time.

Taking beds, wardrobes and tables apart can also tip it. Taken apart, they take up roughly half the space, which is sometimes enough to bring a load back under a large van’s one-trip line. There’s more on working out your load in how to estimate what will fit in a van.

    Driving one yourself

If you’re hiring rather than booking a driver, both are usually 3.5 tonne vans. A standard car licence covers vans up to 3,500kg if you passed your test on or after 1 January 1997, and each van’s weight limits are on the plate fitted to it (GOV.UK explains how vehicle weights work).

A Luton is taller and wider than a panel van, so watch for low bridges, car park barriers and narrow streets. A large van is the easier of the two to drive and park in a city.

Booking either with The Van Man Co

With The Van Man Co, the Ford Transit is our Large van and the Luton is the Extra Large. You’ll see both, with the Medium van, when you get a price. Drivers bring blankets, straps and a trolley, and boxes and packing materials aren’t included. You can see local drivers on the man and van page for Bristol or anywhere else in the UK, and there’s more on each van in what a Transit van is and what a Luton van is.

    FAQs

Is a Luton bigger than a Transit van?

Yes. A Luton holds about 18m³ against about 10m³ for a typical large Transit, and it’s taller and wider inside, at about 220cm high and 200cm wide.

Can a large van do a 2 bed move?

With two trips, usually yes. A typical furnished 2 bed is about 12.35m³, more than a large van takes in one go. With boxes and bags only, one trip is usually enough.

Will a double wardrobe fit in a large van?

Usually, but not standing up. At about 200cm tall it has to lie on its side in a large van’s 180cm of headroom. A Luton takes it upright, or you can take it apart.

Do I need a special licence to drive a Luton?

Not usually. Most Lutons are 3.5 tonne vans, which a category B car licence covers if you passed your test on or after 1 January 1997. Check the van’s plate if you’re not sure.

Is a Luton van more expensive than a large van?

It depends on the driver and the job. With The Van Man Co, the price is an estimate based on time and distance, and you’ll see each van size priced when you get a quote.
