More about Student Moves
Local moving help, explained in detail
A standard first-year load fits in a medium van. Single bed, mattress, desk, bags and boxes don't take up much space. If family can't make the drive or the car won't take everything, a man-and-van booking handles it in one run.
Most halls and purpose-built student accommodation like Unite, iQ, Chapter, Vita and university-owned halls have level or lift access, which means one driver can manage the job comfortably. Upper floors with stairs only is where adding a helper makes a real difference. It speeds up loading and protects the furniture on the stairs. The booking system gives you a price once you enter the postcodes and a loading time estimate.
Have everything packed before the driver arrives. Boxes and bags should be at the door. Packing materials need to be sorted before moving day. They aren't available to add through the man and van booking form.
Shared house and HMO moves often involve several people with different timings and items going to multiple destinations. Multi-stop bookings cover this. Set several pickup and drop-off addresses and the driver works through them in order.
If you and your housemates are moving on the same day, combining into one booking and splitting the cost is usually cheaper than each booking separately. For larger shared houses, step up to a large van or a Luton rather than a medium. If any beds or wardrobes need dismantling, flag it in the booking notes so the driver allocates time for it.
End-of-term timing is tight across every university city. Tenancies often end in the same few weekends and demand on the platform peaks in June and late September. Booking two to three weeks ahead gives you more driver options.
Most end-of-term jobs split the load between two destinations. Some items go home, some go to storage. Multi-stop bookings cover both in one run without needing to arrange separate transport. If you're an international student flying home for the summer, dropping belongings at a storage unit on the way works the same way. For anything going into storage longer-term, pair this booking with our Storage Moves and Transfers service.
Student Moves — frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about this service
7 FAQsHow much does a student move cost?
Enter your postcodes into the booking system for an instant price. The total is the driver's hourly rate multiplied by round-trip route time plus your loading estimate. Medium vans run from /hr, large vans from /hr and Lutons from /hr. A single halls room for a local move usually comes in well under £100. Longer routes cost more.
Can I move out of halls at the end of term in one booking?
Yes. End-of-term clearance is one of the busiest job types on the platform. Pick up from halls and drop at home, at a storage unit, or split between both. Multi-stop bookings let you set several drop-offs in one run.
Can I share a booking with my housemates?
Yes. Put all the pickup and drop-off addresses on the booking and split the cost between you. The driver does the full run and you share the invoice.
Do I need to have everything packed before the driver arrives?
Yes. Get everything boxed and ready at the door before the driver arrives. Packing materials aren't available to add through our man and van booking form, so boxes, tape and wrapping need to be sorted in advance.
What if the move takes longer than I estimated?
The overage is charged at the same hourly rate you were quoted. No premium charges. If you book 30 minutes of loading and it takes 60, the additional 30 minutes rolls onto the invoice at the same rate.
Can I book last-minute after results day or clearing?
Same-day and next-day slots do come up depending on which drivers are free nearby. Enter your postcodes into our booking system and it'll show you who has availability right away.
How does payment work?
You pay a 20% deposit to secure the booking when you confirm. The remaining balance is settled on the day of the move.
