The Van Man Co. House Removals

Local and In-county Moving

The Van Man Co.

A local move is anything that stays close — same town, same county, maybe just a few miles down the road. Cross-town flat moves, village runs, moving to a smaller place nearby. They all price the same way: your drivers hourly rate, the round-trip route time, and however long you think loading will take.

The big thing with local moves is where your driver comes from. Some booking platforms pull in drivers from wherever theres a gap — sometimes 30 or 40 miles away. On a 3-mile local move, you end up paying for all that travel before anyones touched a box. TVMC shows you drivers who are already near your pickup. On a short move, that can be the difference between a job that takes 90 minutes and one that takes 3 hours. Pay 20% when you book, the rest goes to the driver on the day.

    More about Local Moves

Local moving help, explained in detail

Most cross-town moves are done and dusted inside a morning. Swapping flats a few streets away, moving in with someone across the city, downsizing to a smaller place nearby — these are quick jobs. One van, a few hours, sorted.

Short routes mean the price stays low. A 3-mile move with a quick load can come in well under £100 for a medium van. Put your postcodes into the booking system and youll see the price before you commit. No calls, no waiting. If youve got a few stops in the same area — dropping stuff at a charity shop, a parents place, then the new flat — just add them all as drop-off addresses. The driver works through them in order. Its a good way to handle a staged move without booking seperate jobs.

Rural moves are where national booking platforms fall down. They send you a driver whos based in the nearest big city, and that driver has to travel 40 minutes just to reach your village before the job even starts. Your paying for all of that.

TVMC has drivers based in market towns and rural areas, not just city centres. So a move between two Cotswolds villages, or between market towns in the Yorkshire Dales, gets matched with someone whos already in the area. Their drive to your pickup might be 10 minutes, not 45. Narrow lanes, single-track roads, not much parking — rural drivers deal with that stuff every week. Just mention any access issues in the booking notes and theyll plan around it.

Short local moves are the easiest to get done same-day. A driver who finishes a job in the morning can often take another short run that afternoon. The booking system shows whos free near your pickup right now — you dont have to guess or ring around.

People book last-minute local moves all the time. Tenancy ending today and you havent sorted the new place yet. A flat situation that changed overnight. A sofa on Facebook Marketplace that needs collecting this afternoon. None of thats unusual. Just put your postcodes in and see what comes up. Shorter the route, better your chances of finding someone free. If its a weekend move you want, booking a few days ahead gives you alot more options and usually a better choice of driver.

Local Moves — frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about this service

    8 FAQs
What counts as a local or in-county move?

Anything staying within the same county, or under roughly 50 miles, is local. Moving across town, between two villages in the same county, from one end of a city to the other — it all counts. The price doesn't change based on a mileage category. Every job runs on the same formula: driver rate × (route time + loading time). A 3-mile move and a 40-mile move are priced the same way, they just come out at different amounts.

Is a local move cheaper than a long-distance one?

Usually yes. Route time is the biggest factor in the price, so shorter journeys cost less. A typical 1-bed local move comes in well under £100 if loading is quick.

How quickly can I book a local move?

Same-day and next-day slots are often available — enter your postcodes and the booking system will show which drivers near your pickup have current availability.

Do you cover moves between villages or small towns?

Yes. Local drivers based in your county handle village-to-village moves, market-town runs and rural routes. Because the driver is already nearby, the round-trip doesn't balloon the way it does when someone's dispatched from the nearest city.

Can I move to a new address on the same street?

Yes. Even very short moves need a van, blankets, straps and a driver to handle heavy items safely. The route time comes in low, so if loading is quick, the total usually is too.

What van size do I need for a local move?

Same as any move — medium for a studio or 1-bed, large for most 2-beds, Luton for a 3-bed property. The short distance doesn't change the volume of stuff being moved.

Can I split the booking with someone else moving in the same area?

Yes — the booking form supports multiple pickups and drop-offs. Useful for flat-shares splitting up or two friends moving on the same day in the same area.

    How does payment work?

20% deposit to secure the booking when you confirm, the remaining balance is settled on the day.

Say you’re moving from one side of Bristol to the other. Or from a village in Somerset to a market town 20 miles away. A lot of people think they’ll struggle to find a driver for something that small. They don’t.

TVMC has drivers all over the UK — not just the big cities. London has drivers covering every part of it. Islington, Hackney, Camden, Lambeth, Southwark, Wandsworth, Lewisham, Tower Hamlets. And out past the M25 into Surrey, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire too. Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham — all well covered, same-day slots come up pretty often in these areas.

The bit that suprises most people is the coverage outside the cities. Surrey, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire — all those towns and villages inbetween have drivers in them. The South West is a good example. Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall all have drivers based there. So a move between two Cotswolds villages, or from one end of Somerset to the other, goes to someone whos already nearby. Not someone who had to drive 45 minutes just to reach you.

Same through the Midlands — Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Shropshire. Up North — Lancashire, North Yorkshire, the East Riding, Cumbria, Northumberland. East Anglia covers Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. Scotland runs through Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeenshire, Fife and the Borders. Wales covers Cardiff, Gwent, Pembrokeshire, Powys and the North Wales coast.

All sorts of moves go through this network. Moving across town. Between two villages. Downsizing in the same county. An urgent move that needs doing today. When you put your postcode in, the booking system shows drivers whos actually near you — not whoever happened to have a gap that day.
