The Van Man Co. House Removals

Furniture Assembly and Disassembly

The Van Man Co.

Furniture assembly and disassembly works two ways on TVMC. The first is built into a move — your driver takes apart the bed, the wardrobe, the dining table at pickup, transports them, then rebuilds them at the new place. The second is standalone — a driver comes to your home with tools, assembles whatever flat-pack you’ve bought, and leaves.

Both work on the same hourly model. Assembly time is added to the loading and unloading time you book, billed at your driver’s hourly rate. A bed typically takes 30-60 minutes to build; a wardrobe 45-90 minutes; a full IKEA bedroom set up to half a day. Add the realistic time when booking, and the price stays predictable. Most drivers carry standard tools — Allen keys, screwdrivers, tape — but if your kit needs an unusual fitting, have it ready from the flat-pack box on the day.

    More about Furniture Assembly

Local moving help, explained in detail

Standalone assembly is the simplest version of this booking. Your IKEA delivery has arrived, the boxes are stacked in the hallway, the instructions are inscrutable and the prospect of an entire weekend with an Allen key is unappealing. Book a medium van and the time you think the build needs — a bed for 60 minutes, a wardrobe for 90, a full bedroom for half a day — and a driver arrives with tools.

Most retail flat-pack brands are in scope: IKEA, Argos, John Lewis, Habitat, Made, Wayfair, Dunelm, B&Q, Homebase. Drivers carry standard Allen keys, screwdrivers and tape; the brand-specific fittings should be in your flat-pack box. If you have an unusual item — a vintage build, a specialist sliding-door wardrobe, a custom bunk — share the assembly guide with the driver before booking so they can tell you whether it's in scope.

Most large items in modern homes were carried in flat-packed and assembled on site, so taking them out the same way is the standard approach. A king-size bed frame won't fit through most doorways assembled. A double wardrobe down a Victorian staircase is a non-starter unless it comes apart. A 6-seater dining table through a top-floor flat door is frequently dismantle-only.

Flag the disassembly and reassembly when you book the move. The driver brings the right tools, allocates the time at pickup to take items apart, secures the components and fittings during transport, and rebuilds at the destination. Add the realistic time to your loading and unloading estimate — a bed plus a wardrobe at each end is typically 90-120 minutes of work in addition to the standard loading. The hourly rate stays the same; you're just booking more of it.

A common booking is the all-in-one: collect from a retail store, deliver to your home, assemble on site. IKEA's "delivery only" service drops boxes at your front door without bringing them in or building anything. The TVMC version goes further — driver collects from the store, delivers to your home, brings the boxes inside and builds the contents.

Pick a Luton van for a full bedroom or living-room haul — flat-pack boxes take up serious space when there's a wardrobe and a bed and a chest of drawers in the load. The booking covers the round trip from the driver's base to the store to your home and back, plus loading at the store, unloading at your home, and the build time. Add the time honestly when booking — half a day for a full bedroom is usually enough; trying to compress it into 90 minutes leads to overage charges.

Furniture Assembly — frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about this service

    8 FAQs
Do you offer furniture assembly on moving day?

Yes — flag it in your booking and the driver will take items apart at pickup and rebuild them at the destination. Beds, wardrobes, desks, dining tables and most flat-pack pieces are in scope. Add the assembly and disassembly time to your loading and unloading estimate.

Can you collect from IKEA, Argos or John Lewis and assemble at my home?

Yes — a popular booking. Driver collects from the store, delivers to your home, and assembles on site. A Luton van handles bigger orders with multiple boxes. Flag both the assembly and the collection address when you book.

    Do you bring the tools?

Standard tools — Allen keys, screwdrivers, tape — are carried by most drivers. For specialist or brand-specific fittings, have the tools from your flat-pack box ready on the day. They're usually included in the box.

    How much does assembly cost?

Assembly time is added to your loading and unloading time and billed at your driver's hourly rate. A bed typically takes 30-60 minutes; a wardrobe 45-90 minutes; a full IKEA bedroom up to half a day. Plan the hours and the total stays predictable.

Can I book just assembly without a move?

Yes — standalone assembly bookings work the same way. Book the smallest van size and add the time your items need. The driver will come to your home with tools, build the furniture, and leave.

Can you disassemble and take away old furniture I'm replacing?

Yes — disassembly, removal and drop-off at a charity shop, council tip or recycling centre all fits into a multi-stop booking. Set the tip or charity shop as your drop-off and the driver works through it as part of the run.

    Which brands can you assemble?

Most common flat-pack retailers: IKEA, Argos, John Lewis, Habitat, Made, Wayfair, Dunelm, B&Q, Homebase, Tesco. For something unusual, share the assembly guide with the driver before booking.

    How does payment work?

20% deposit to secure the booking when you confirm, the remaining balance is settled on the day.

Furniture Assembly available across the UK

Local drivers covering cities, towns, counties and regions

    259 areas

Furniture assembly and disassembly is covered across the UK through the same driver network as every other TVMC service. Most major flat-pack retailers have store networks covered by drivers nearby — IKEA stores in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cardiff, Newcastle, Nottingham, Coventry and Exeter all have drivers within reasonable reach for collection-and-assembly bookings.

The full brand list drivers handle includes IKEA (the most common booking), Argos, John Lewis, Habitat, Made, Wayfair, Dunelm, B&Q, Homebase and Tesco Direct. Niche specialists like Soak.com, Furniture Village, DFS, Oak Furnitureland and Heal’s are also part of the regular mix. For online retailers that ship to the customer’s address rather than offering store collection, the driver arrives at your home and assembles the items already delivered — no collection step needed.

Furniture types in scope: beds (single, double, king-size, super-king, divan, ottoman storage, bunk), wardrobes (double, sliding-door, fitted), chests of drawers, bedside tables, desks, office chairs, bookcases, shelving, sofas (most flat-pack sofa beds and modular pieces), dining tables and chairs, coffee tables, TV units, sideboards, dressers, cots, cot beds, changing tables and highchairs. Heavier or non-standard items — full antique restorations, custom-built furniture, very old vintage pieces with unique fittings — are in scope but worth flagging in advance so the right driver is allocated.

UK coverage extends beyond the major cities. Rural and market-town drivers handle assembly in Cotswold villages, Lake District holiday cottages, Yorkshire Dales and Welsh-valley homes — anywhere a van can reach for a regular delivery, an assembly booking can follow. Same-day and weekend slots come up regularly. The shorter the route, the more flexible the timing.
