The Cheapest Way to Transport Furniture in the UK

Quick summary (October 2026): The cheapest way to transport furniture in the UK depends on how much you’re moving, how far, and whether you can lift it yourself. For a short local move with help, hiring a van and driving it yourself is often cheapest. For a few big pieces with no lifting help, a man and van is usually the best value, and The Van Man Co prices each job on time and distance. Taking furniture apart and picking the smallest van that fits keeps any option cheaper. To see drivers and prices, start with the Bristol man and van page.

Moving a sofa, a wardrobe or a bed isn’t the same job as moving house. It’s one or two big things, they’re awkward, and you probably don’t want to pay for a whole removals crew to shift them.

There are a handful of ways to do it, and the cheapest one isn’t always the one with the lowest headline price. It depends on the distance, the size of the van you need, and whether you’ve got anyone to help you lift.

The first thing to pin down is the van size, because that drives most of the cost whichever route you choose.

The options, cheapest first (usually)

Basically, the more of the work you do yourself, the less you pay. Here’s how the usual options compare for moving a few pieces of furniture:

Hiring a van and doing it yourself

If you’re happy to drive and lift, hiring a van is often the lowest cost for a short local move. A standard car licence covers vans up to 3,500kg, which includes most vans you’d hire for furniture.

Bear in mind what’s on top of the hire itself: fuel, any extra insurance or excess cover, and your own time. You’ll also need blankets and straps to stop things getting scratched or sliding about, and at least one other person for anything heavy. Our guide on how to secure furniture in a van goes through the loading.

Booking a man and van

For a few big pieces with nobody to help, a man and van is usually the best value. You’re paying for a driver with a van rather than a full crew, and they do the lifting with you.

With The Van Man Co, you put in your pickup and drop-off postcodes and get a price straight away. It’s an estimate based on time and distance, and it includes the driver’s travel from their base to your pickup and back from your drop-off, because that’s the actual shape of the job. The 20% deposit is only charged once a driver confirms, and the rest is paid in cash to the driver on the day. Drivers bring blankets, straps and a trolley, and some offer an extra pair of hands if something needs two people.

    Delivery marketplaces

Sites like AnyVan match your job to transport providers already doing that route, and on Shiply, delivery firms send you quotes for your job. That can work out cheaper on a long route, especially if you’re flexible on the date. The trade-off is time: you post the job and wait for quotes, and you’re comparing firms you may not have heard of. There’s more on how they compare in our AnyVan alternatives guide.

Just bought it? Ask the shop first

If the furniture is new, check what the shop offers before booking anything. Some deliver for free, some charge, and some only do kerbside. For second-hand buys from Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree, see our guide to arranging a sofa pickup and delivery.

Five ways to make any option cheaper

    • Take it apart. Beds, wardrobes and tables take up roughly half the space dismantled, which can drop you a van size.
    • Pick the smallest van that fits. Our 3D van size calculator checks each piece against each van, height included, so a tall fridge freezer or wardrobe doesn’t catch you out. It’s a guide, so measure if it’s close.
    • Do it in one trip. If you’ve got a few items going to the same place, move them together rather than one at a time.
    • Be ready when the van arrives. With a man and van, the price is based on time, so having everything cleared, measured and ready to go keeps it down. If loading takes longer than quoted, the extra time is charged at an hourly rate.
    • Sort the parking. Parking is your responsibility at both ends, and a space right outside saves carrying time. Check with your local council if you need a permit or a bay suspension.

    FAQs

What’s the cheapest way to move one piece of furniture?

If it fits in a car or a friend’s van, that’s usually cheapest. If not, a man and van means you don’t have to hire a van for the day or find someone to help you lift, and you pay for the time the job takes.

Is it cheaper to hire a van or book a man and van?

Hiring a van can be cheaper for a short local move if you can drive it and have help with the lifting. Add the fuel, any insurance and your own time to the hire price, then compare it with a man and van price for the same job.

Can I move a sofa in a car?

Usually not, even with the seats down. A typical three-seater sofa is about 210cm long and fits in a medium van, and our calculator shows which van your own sofa fits in.

Do I need a special licence to hire a van for furniture?

Not usually. A category B car licence covers vans up to 3,500kg. The hire company can tell you the weight of the van you’re booking.

How is a man and van priced?

With The Van Man Co, the price is an estimate based on time and distance, including the driver’s travel to your pickup and back from your drop-off. A 20% deposit is charged once a driver confirms, and the rest is paid in cash to the driver on the day.
