Parking Permits & Moving Access in North London

Moving to or from North London often means dealing with controlled parking zones, resident permit areas, and narrow Victorian streets where parking can be challenging. Whether you’re relocating to Hampstead, Tottenham, or Enfield, understanding the parking rules in your area can make moving day significantly smoother.

North London spans three main boroughs—Barnet, Haringey, and Enfield—each with its own parking regulations, suspension procedures, and fees. This guide covers what you need to know to secure parking access for your removal van on moving day.

Do You Need a Parking Bay Suspension?

A parking bay suspension temporarily reserves a space outside your property for a removal vehicle. You’ll typically need one if you live on a street with resident permit parking, pay-and-display bays, or single yellow lines. Without a suspension, your removal driver may need to park further away, adding time and cost to your move, or risk receiving a penalty charge notice.

Before applying for a suspension, check whether your street falls within a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ). If the CPZ only operates during limited hours—say, Monday to Friday 10am to 12 noon—you may be able to schedule your move outside those times and avoid the suspension cost entirely. However, if you live on a street with all-day restrictions or your move falls during controlled hours, a suspension is strongly recommended.

Barnet Council

Barnet covers areas including High Barnet, Finchley, Hendon, Edgware, and Golders Green. The borough has numerous CPZs, particularly around town centres and tube stations.

Parking Bay Suspension

Barnet charges £67.08 per bay per day (each bay covers approximately 5 metres of kerbside space), plus a non-refundable administration fee of £165.12 per application. For a typical one-day suspension of two bays, expect to pay around £300 in total.

Applications must be submitted at least 7 calendar days before your required start date. You can apply online through the MiPermit system, and you’ll need to identify the exact bays using the Traffweb website, which shows CPZ boundaries and parking restrictions across the borough.

Once approved, the council places signage showing the suspension is in effect. Vehicles parked in contravention may receive a penalty charge notice and could be relocated. If someone parks in your suspended bay on moving day, you can report this to the enforcement line on 0204 636 9561.

Dispensations

If you need to park on yellow lines rather than in a marked bay, Barnet offers parking dispensations. These allow a specific vehicle to park temporarily where waiting is normally prohibited. Dispensations are granted for one vehicle registration only and cannot be transferred. Contact the suspension team on 0208 359 7446 or email them for details.

Haringey Council

Haringey includes Wood Green, Crouch End, Muswell Hill, Tottenham, and Hornsey. The borough has extensive CPZ coverage, with many zones having different operating hours.

Parking Bay Suspension

Haringey charges £41 per single car space per day, plus an administration fee of £138.60. For a one-day suspension of two spaces, the total comes to approximately £220.

Applications must be submitted at least 2 weeks before the suspension start date. Apply online through your Haringey parking account at myaccount.haringey.gov.uk. If you need to suspend bays on more than one road, you must submit separate applications for each road.

The council aims to put up advance warning notices around 7 days before the suspension begins, but cannot guarantee the area will be kept clear. If vehicles are parked in your suspended bay on moving day, contact the enforcement team or Haringey Car Pound to request removal. Note that vehicle removal cannot always be guaranteed.

Cancellation and Changes

If you need to cancel after your application has been processed, the fee is £69.30. If suspension boards have already been installed, the cancellation fee increases to £138.60. To change your suspension date, contact suspensions@haringey.gov.uk at least 8 working days before the scheduled start.

CPZ Operating Hours

Haringey’s CPZs have varying hours. Some operate only for short windows—such as Monday to Friday 12 noon to 2pm—while others run Monday to Saturday 8am to 6.30pm. Around Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, certain zones have additional match-day restrictions. Check the specific CPZ hours for your street before deciding whether a suspension is necessary.

Enfield Council

Enfield covers areas including Enfield Town, Edmonton, Palmers Green, Southgate, and Winchmore Hill. The borough has fewer CPZs than Haringey but is expanding coverage in areas with high parking pressure.

Parking Bay Suspension

Enfield charges a fee for each chargeable day per space required. A chargeable day is any day when parking restrictions would normally apply in the area—if you’re suspending a bay in a CPZ that only operates Monday to Friday, weekend days won’t be charged.

Applications should be made at least 10 working days before the suspension is needed. Once your application is accepted and you confirm you want to proceed, payment must be made promptly. Provide payment confirmation before the scheduled date to ensure preparations are in order.

Temporary Dispensations

Enfield offers temporary dispensations for short-term parking in restricted areas, which can be useful for house moves or building works. The cost is £10 per vehicle for one week. Note that a dispensation does not guarantee a parking spot—it simply means you won’t receive a penalty charge notice for parking in the restricted area.

Apply by emailing parking@enfield.gov.uk or calling 020 3856 0036. You can also visit the Parking Shop in person at Crown Road Vehicle Park, Crown Road, Enfield EN1 1TH.

Practical Tips for Moving Day Parking

Regardless of which borough you’re in, several practical steps can help your move go smoothly.

Check CPZ hours carefully. Many North London CPZs operate for only a few hours per day. If you can schedule your move to arrive before restrictions start or after they end, you may not need a suspension at all.

Apply early. Don’t leave the suspension application until the last minute. Processing times vary, and popular moving periods—particularly end-of-month dates—may have higher demand. Barnet requires 7 days’ notice, Haringey requires 2 weeks, and Enfield requires 10 working days.

Request enough space. A standard parking bay is approximately 5 metres long. A medium van (Transit Custom size) needs one bay, while a large Luton van typically requires two bays. Underestimating the space needed can leave your driver struggling to fit close to your property.

Note the exact bay locations. When applying, you’ll need to specify precisely which bays you want suspended. Use the council’s online mapping tools—Traffweb for Barnet, or the CPZ maps on Haringey and Enfield websites—to identify the correct locations.

Keep contact numbers handy. On moving day, have the council’s enforcement line number ready in case someone parks in your suspended bay. Quick reporting gives enforcement officers the best chance of clearing the space before it delays your move.

Loading Without a Suspension

In some circumstances, you may be able to load and unload without a formal suspension. Goods vehicles can typically park temporarily on single yellow lines to collect and deliver goods, provided loading is continuous and the vehicle is not left unattended. However, this doesn’t apply to double yellow lines with loading restrictions, red routes, or during CPZ hours in resident bays.

This approach carries risk. Some enforcement officers interpret the rules strictly, and if your vehicle is stationary for more than a few minutes—even while you’re carrying items inside—you may receive a penalty charge notice. For most house moves, where loading takes several hours, a suspension provides certainty.

Penalty Charge Notice Increases

From April 2025, parking penalty charges increased across all London boroughs. Higher-level parking contraventions now attract a £160 fine (reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days), while lower-level contraventions cost £110 (reduced to £55 if paid early). These increases make proper planning even more important—a single ticket can cost more than a bay suspension.

Quick Reference: Suspension Costs and Lead Times

Barnet: £67.08 per bay per day + £165.12 admin fee. Apply 7+ days ahead via MiPermit.

Haringey: £41 per space per day + £138.60 admin fee. Apply 2+ weeks ahead online.

Enfield: Variable per-day charge. Apply 10+ working days ahead. Temporary dispensation £10 per week.
