The British Association of Removers, known as BAR, is the long-established trade association for removal companies in the UK. It sets standards for the industry, and its members agree to operate under a Code of Practice that covers quoting, conduct, and how disputes are handled.
What BAR membership signals, according to the Association’s own description:
- Vetting and inspection. Member firms are vetted before joining and inspected regularly against the Association’s standards.
- A Code of Practice. Members commit to clear quoting, honest advice, and defined service standards.
- Insurance standards. Members must hold insurance that meets BAR’s requirements.
- An Advance Payment Guarantee. Where a customer pays in advance, that money is protected if the mover runs into financial trouble before the job.
- Dispute resolution. BAR runs a free, independent dispute resolution service for customers of member firms.
BAR membership is most associated with full removalist companies rather than smaller man-and-van operators, partly because the membership requirements and costs suit established firms running larger fleets.
For a customer, BAR membership is one signal of a legitimate operator, alongside checks like proper goods in transit insurance and, for larger firms, an operator’s licence. It is not the only mark of a good mover. Plenty of reliable independent operators are not BAR members. But it is a recognised standard worth knowing about when comparing quotes.
