What is a Removal Comparison Site?

A removal comparison site (also called a removal aggregator) is an online platform that collects quotes from multiple van and removal operators for a single customer request. The customer enters their move details once. The platform forwards the brief to its network of drivers and removal firms, then presents the customer with several quotes to choose from. UK examples include AnyVan, Shiply, Compare My Move, and Buzzmove.

How they make money:

  • Commission on completed bookings. The platform takes a percentage (typically 10-25%) of the price the customer pays. That percentage is built into the quote, and the driver receives the rest.
  • Lead fees. Some platforms charge drivers a fee per lead they’re shown, whether or not they win the booking.
  • Subscription tiers. Drivers may pay monthly for premium placement, faster lead access, or extra visibility.

The pros for customers:

  • One brief, multiple quotes. Saves the time of contacting operators individually.
  • Reverse auction effect. Drivers bidding against each other can push prices down.
  • Platform-side guarantees. Most aggregators add a layer of protection (deposit holding, dispute resolution, basic insurance review) on top of the driver’s own cover.

The cons that are less obvious:

  • The commission is in the price. The “deal” is partly funded by the driver taking a smaller cut, which can affect service quality if operators feel squeezed.
  • Anonymous quoting. The customer often doesn’t see which specific driver they’re being booked with until close to the move. That matters for reviews, reputation, and local familiarity.
  • Generic quoting models. The platform’s pricing engine may not capture nuances of access, parking, stairs, or fragile inventory as accurately as a local operator who knows the area.

The honest comparison: aggregators are good for fast, low-stakes moves where price is the main driver. They’re less good when the move has complications, when local knowledge matters, or when the customer wants to vet who’s actually doing the work. For a 1-bed flat being moved next weekend with no fragile items, an aggregator can save real money. For a 4-bed family house with restricted access, contacting a local operator directly tends to produce a better outcome, often at a similar total price once commission is stripped out. Compare aggregator pricing against the fixed-price or hourly rate quotes a local operator would give directly.
